State Journal,

In a recent issue of the State Journal a statement was published from the city of Lincoln board of health relating to Christian Science which is somewhat misleading. If materia medica always healed, there might be some reason in all accepting its ministrations in case of sickness or ailments of any kind, but in view of the relative success and failure of medical practice and Christian Science practice, Christian Scientists are fully justified in relying upon Christian Science for their health. Materia medica has not proved its case through the thousands of years since its first appearance in Egypt and China down to the present day. In spite of the great labor expended, the sacrifices made, and the never ending experiments undertaken, sickness has not only not been banished from the world at large, but the number of cases has constantly increased.

Such is the condition of affairs in the world today, to which Christian Science comes as a liberator from the bondage of unsuccessful conservatism. It brings an explanation of the nature of disease which proves itself to be correct by the multitudes of its cures. Moreover, when the explanation given by Christian Science is found to be more in keeping with the teachings of the world's great philosophers than with the unstable popular assumptions of the hour, the public should not fear to alter its preconceived views to meet the demand of progress.

Christian Scientists are law-abiding citizens, and carefully observe quarantine regulations; at the same time they wish to keep abreast of the times, and they claim the right of pointing out the instability and shifting nature of some theories imposed on the public in regard to the healing of the sick. Christian Scientists are not engaged in opposing any means which may be used for alleviating suffering and restoring the sick; they have found a method which experience has proved to be abundantly helpful in time of need. They only ask fair-minded people to test for themselves the efficacy of what they have found so beneficial. Christians are also reminded that Jesus never made any distinction between organic and functional diseases, nor advised his followers to do so, but a careful analysis of his cures will reveal many startling instances of his successful instantaneous healing of all forms of ailments without the use of material remedies. Christian Scientists would not consider themselves worthy followers of the great Master if they should yield their inalienable right to follow in his footsteps.
