After six years' study in Christian Science, I feel impelled to say a few words for the great blessing which Mrs. Eddy has given the world, and with the hope that it may meet the eye of even one who is struggling to find health and happiness. In searching from church to church I became an agnostic, because I found not the rest I sought; so, though I was prejudiced and stubborn, physical ills compelled me to try Christian Science as a last resource. I did not want the religion; I thought I had had enough of that.
From infancy I was considered a delicate child, with weak lungs, throat trouble, bad stomach, and many other ailments. For twenty-five years I suffered, food especially hurting me, so that I was starved and miserable. I tried all kinds of doctors, and was faithful to their directions, also dieting, fast-cure, massage, baths, etc.; but nothing helped me. I then took up psychology, and studied it quite extensively, also so-called mental healing, and for a while I seemed better; but when a final severe test came (it was acute lung trouble), it left me terribly depressed and melancholy, a mental condition which I could not shake off or even describe. Later, the same trouble again appeared, when I was visiting in Memphis. I then tried Christian Science for the physical relief alone, never thinking to mention the mental condition so distasteful to me, but I got healing for both. They were gone, never to return, and the relief came in less than an hour. Not until then did I understand Jesus' saying, "If I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out?" also Mrs. Eddy's statement respecting "the sunlight of Truth" (Science and Health, p. 162). This one experience showed me conclusively the depth of Truth and the purity of Christian Science healing and its superiority over all other methods.
The beauty and benediction of that first treatment rests on me yet and ever will. Words cannot express my gratitude for the sweet revelation and teachings of Christian Science, for it truly gives us that peace of which the world knows nothing.
