Leader,

An issue of recent date contains excerpts from a sermon in which the clergyman makes statements in regard to Christian Science that are misleading. We appreciate his kindly references to Mrs. Eddy's work in emphasizing the teaching that "God is Love" and the need of faith.

Christian Science does not teach that strychnine could be given to any one without injury. It not only does not endorse the use of poisons in any way, but claims that poison should not be used at all for healing purposes. It is true that Christian Science teaches that a correct understanding of God will enable one who has taken poison by mistake to overcome the effects of it. In doing this they are only fulfilling Jesus' statement in regard to "them that believe," that "if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them."

Mrs. Eddy does not claim that in this age it is possible for any one to overcome death. In "Unity of Good" (p. 43) she says: "This generation seems too material for any strong demonstration over death. ... I have by no means spoken of myself, I cannot speak of myself as 'sufficient for these things.'" Jesus said: "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death." The practice of Christian Science is as yet in its infancy. It cannot reasonably be expected that those who profess to follow it can obtain results in the beginning of their study which are really the ultimate of the teachings of Christianity. Paul said, "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death."
