The healing power of Christian Science is definitely defined in the first paragraph of the opening chapter of the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, as follows: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." That the healing of the sick through the prayer of the righteous was confined to any particular time or to any chosen few, is not substantiated by Bible records or by the teachings of Jesus. Both before and after the Christian era we have records of the sick being healed through an understanding of God's law. Many instances of the healing of the sick and the raising of the dead by the prophets are chronicled in the Old Testament.

In Luke's gospel is recorded the sending forth of not only the twelve, but also of the seventy, who returned again with joy, saying, "Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name." It is also related in the book of Acts that Paul, who was converted to Christianity after the crucifixion of Jesus, cured various diseases, insanity included, during his ministry in Asia, and raised the young man Eutychus who fell from the third loft and was taken up dead. Paul also proved the viper to be harmless and healed the father of Publius, who was stricken with the bloody flux; and not only do the Scriptures record "sings following," but in Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" we find that for some hundred years the early church fathers healed the sick through prayer.

What words in the Bible are more explicit than these from Mark's gospel, in which the Master gives his final injunction just before his ascension: "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. ... And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Christian Science is proving that God is the same today, tomorrow, and forever; and that the signs do follow now as aforetime is testified to by thousands who have been healed from sickness and sin.
