THE LECTURES
A lecture upon Christian Science was delivered by Frank H. Leonard Thursday evening, March 24, at the Opera House to an audience of three hundred people. He was introduced by Attorney Paul M. North of Rocky Ford, a member of the city council of his city, who said in part,—
Modern Christianity came to this world about nineteen hundred years ago with the birth of Jesus Christ, who came to a world that was under a spell of materialism, to a people given over to egoism, self-desire, and sensuous allurements. He came with the simple message, "On earth peace, good will toward men." He taught sublime truths; he taught moral idealism; he also healed the sick and told others to do the same. But those people could not understand him, and because they could not understand him they crucified him. However, a few did understand him and did do as he taught, and during all the years since his crucifixion some of those truths have been taught by some people. But many of Christ's teachings became actually forgotten and obsolete with the passing of the centuries, and it was left for the present generation to witness the reestablishment of Christ's teachings in the Christian Science religion. This religion was rediscovered only forty-four years ago. Its growth has been marvelous. Its teachings are based absolutely upon the teachings o Christ Jesus. This religion has met with a great deal of opposition and criticism, but it has met this opposition and criticism with dignity, with charity, with no sensationalism, with no attitude of persecution, and standing entirely upon its own merits.
Many of you are here tonight because you have been helped and healed by reason of Christian Science, and you are grateful. I became interested in this religion on account of a healing in my own family, a condition that doctors doing all they could had not relieved in ten years' time: but it was absolutely healed in three weeks under Christian Science treatment. That was six years ago. Many of you are here because you want to know about this organization and its doctrine, an organization that only sixteen years ago did not own a church edifice, but which today owns hundreds of church buildings and includes over one thousand branch organizations throughout the world.
