Cultured and deep-thinking men and women of all...
La Junta (Col.) Democrat
Cultured and deep-thinking men and women of all professions and ranks of life are accepting the teachings of Christian Science and enjoying its benefits. Any one who has practised Christian Science knows that it is the opposite of mental suggestion or hypnotism. Hypnotism is the erroneous influence of the carnal mind. Christian Science healing is the effect of pure exalted prayer, the result of a realization of God's presence, power, and love. The practice of hypnotism is a complete departure from the teachings of Christian Science, hence it would he an utter impossibility for any one to practise hypnotism and be a Christian Scientist.
The teachings of Christian Science are based wholly upon the Scriptures. The old Greek philosophers were pagans, and their teachings were at variance with the teachings of the Bible; hence Christian Science could not have been "borrowed from the old Greek philosophers," as our critic declares. Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science came to her as the result of many years of earnest study of the Scriptures and of consecrated search for Truth. Through the practice of Christian Science, sickness is healed and the patient is morally reformed and cleansed of his sins. In fact, sin causes disease, and must first be cast out before the sick person is healed. It is emphatically the purpose of Christian Science to destroy sin; and every genuine Christian Science healer shows his patient the necessity of overcoming sin in order to be healed. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 404); "Healing the sick and reforming the sinner are one and the same thing in Christian Science. Both cures require the same method and are inseparable in Truth."
