Before April, 1908, I had attended the Wednesday...
Before April, 1908, I had attended the Wednesday evening meetings of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, in this city for over a year, but never thought of going on Sunday, and never found (seemingly) to read that wonderful book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," as I do now, although it lay the library table all the time. The meetings seemed to give me something to think about, as I was sure that the good people who told of their healings were speaking the truth, and I was becoming interested and began to think that Christian Science was what I wanted. Before this time I could never become sufficiently interested in any church to want to attend once a week, but now I feel that I cannot afford to miss a Sunday service or a Wednesday meeting. I love to go, and I can feel the love that surrounds me there at every meeting.
During the month mentioned above, Christian Science was given a severe test (at least in our eyes), and not found wanting, when our four-year-old boy was healed of a serious attack of throat trouble. (He had previously been healed of a skin disease, but I thought that it was just a "coincidence.") When he complained of his throat and fever was coming on, we realized that something had to be done at once, and as this was our first time to call for help since being interested in Science, I remarked to my wife, "Here is our chance to try Christian Science. Shall we use medicine, or call for a practitioner?" The latter was decided on, and how thankful we have been ever since. The child was treated in the evening and the next afternoon he was playing, the fever all gone and the danger-line passed. With a few more treatments he was himself again, with no bad effects afterward with the exception of a cough, which was overcome later. A close friend, a Christian Science nurse, with many years' previous experience in hospitals, afterward told us that this case was one of the worst which she had ever seen in her experience.
This healing was an eye-opener to us, but shortly afterward the little fellow was healed of whooping-cough in a most satisfactory way, and then came another remarkable healing of stammering and stuttering, to which he had been subject for several months, so much so that others outside the family could hardly understand him: but after several treatments he could talk as plainly as any child. For the above healings, all of which took place inside of one years, we cannot find words to express our gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer of this great truth, and to those who have helped us to realize this better way to live. Christian Science gives me that peace and harmony which I never understood before. I am better mentally, morally, physically, and, by far, spiritually, as I never used to think of reading the Bible; now it gives me pleasure to do so, as we have the "key" to it in Mrs. Eddy's grand book.
