Those unfamiliar with and disposed to be critical of...

Cassville (Wis.) Record

Those unfamiliar with and disposed to be critical of Christian Science should remember that the doctrine of Christ and him crucified, as presented by St. Paul was to the Greeks foolishness and to the Jews a stumbling-block; yet the doctrine and teachings of Christ Jesus have been the most potent factor in the uplift of humanity. Christian Science comes emphasizing the necessity of heeding the whole gospel, pointing out the essentials and showing the scientific and practical method of working the work demanded of the followers of Christ.

Christ Jesus taught that God is Spirit, and Science reveals the impossibility of Spirit's creating a material world. Therefore, according to Christian Science, the sun, stars, earth, water, and trees all represent spiritual ideas, and it is because of the misinterpretation of false, material sense that they seem to be matter. According to the first chapter of Genesis, man was made in the image and likeness of God, Spirit; hence he was and is spiritual, and not of clay. The second account of creation, found in the second chapter of Genesis, is simply meant to portray the erroneous conception of the true creation; or, putting it in another way, it is mortal mind's misinterpretation of the real creation as recorded in the first chapter of Genesis.

It is not the teaching of Christian Science that matter has no existence outside of the mind of any individual; but that, despite the fact that God, Spirit, Mind, hath evolved the whole creation out of Himself, that He is infinite and all-exclusive; that He produces nothing but the good, the eternal, the undying, the beautiful, the pure, and the satisfying, the unillumined senses of the ordinary mortal misinterpret spiritual realities and call them material, and from this false apprehension discord, decay, and death ensue. All our critic or any one else needs to do is to acquaint himself with God and be at peace. The history of mankind furnishes evidence that peace is not found in its materialistic theories and philosophies.
