GROWING

Not by the passing years or season's beauty
Mark we our growth, as sowers watch the seed;
Not e'en in reckoning the hourly duty
Which gains a goal or satisfies a greed.

We grow by crushing out some false temptation;
Standing aside to give the stranger room;
Waiting, with outstretched hand, the demonstration
Of Truth's triumphant cry o'er error's doom.

We grow in power when human weakness binds us
More firmly to that Truth all power above;
We grow in gladness, as each sorrow finds us
Less glad to grieve—knowing that God is Love.

We grow in purity when angels, waiting,
Find entertainment in our hearts long cold;
We grow in understanding when translating
To knowledge rare the faint beliefs of old.

We grow in Love when o'er a world of sadness
We ring the joyous news of Christ again!
And from our storehouse cast abroad the gladness
Of Christ on earth, peace and good will to men.
