One day early in the spring of 1899, our daughter came...

One day early in the spring of 1899, our daughter came home from school with symptoms of a fever. A relative who is a Christian Science practitioner took the case, and the child passed through the different stages of the disease with but little discomfort. About this time, however, there was a stir in the neighborhood, and the health officer came to examine the child. He found no cause, he said, for quarantine, but after this the child commenced to suffer greatly. She was taken with a peculiar trouble in her limbs, which made it difficult for her to move, and though always bright and active when well, she now presented a limp and lifeless appearance. The practitioner came and remained with us through the night, and words fail to express how much the truth was to me through that experience, as the distress of mind and body was so great that I required help for myself. Faithful work was done for both of us, and only those who have experienced the help which Christian Science gives can understand the relief that came with the realization of Paul's words, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." My own distress was overcome, and in its place came rest and quietness. The child was soon relieved, and although her limbs were weak for some time, she finally experienced perfect healing.

A little later my sister's child, about four years of age, was taken with the fever, and the health officer came and this time put up a notice of quarantine, which was not removed for several weeks. The little boy had previously been troubled with gatherings in his ears, and this ailment was so much aggravated at this time that it looked very serious to the health officer. He knew we were Christian Scientists, and may have thought we were not doing all that should be done, but he was at all times courteous and showed great consideration and kindness, leaving us to work out the healing through Christian Science without interference. The practitioner kept at work until perfect healing was accomplished, not even a scar remaining to show where the trouble had been, thus proving that Christian Scientists take the best care of their children when they trust the welfare of their little ones with their heavenly Father, the one perfect physician.

Much bitterness was expressed through anonymous letters to the health officer, who said he wished people would be open and honest, and sign their names to the statements they made. Nearly every member of the household was attacked during this time of trial, but help came with the thought expressed by Isaiah: "For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall." Another time our help came from reading "Unity of Good" by Mrs. Eddy. The raging of evil finally ceased, and the blessings more than made up for all the persecution that had been heaped upon us. We heard no more of the fever in my daughter's grade at school, and the whole atmosphere seemed changed.
