Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says in Science and Health...
Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says in Science and Health (p. 200), that "Life is, always has been, and ever will be independent of matter;" and I have recently had a beautiful proof of God's protecting care. I turned from material remedies to Christian Science about three years ago, and although the benefits which I received from it have been very great, still I did not realize how near God is to us, till His tender care was manifested to me at the time of an accident. I was on my way to a Wednesday evening meeting, with some friends, and was about to cross a street near the church when without any warning a large touring-car came rapidly around the corner, and as I looked up the headlights were close upon me. The automobile struck me on the side, throwing me on my face, and two wheels passed over my body.
I had just been telling my friends what Christian Science had done for me, and my thought was full of God's goodness and love, so, as I saw the automobile bearing down upon me, my thought turned to God immediately for protection and help. I was perfectly conscious of everything that occurred, and felt one wheel after the other pass over me, but wonderful as it may seem to others, they felt as a featherweight to me. In an unexplainable way I seemed to be lifted up above it all. A Christian Science practitioner came up just at this time, and stayed with me as long as I needed her. I was carried into a house near by, and an ambulance was sent for to take me home. Although my gown and underclothing were badly torn, and my jewelry bent out of shape, I was practically unharmed. My parents called a surgeon to examine me, but to his amazement he found no injuries beyond a few bruises and one arm that he thought might be seriously hurt. He therefore continued to examine it each day, until he was finally assured as to my safety.
Our dear Leader says in Science and Health (p. 560) that "the great miracle, to human sense, is divine Love;" and such it was to me. The surgeon said I was very brave, but I did not have any pain at all, and after the first night or two I slept as usual. I had no sign of fever at any time, and ate three hearty meals a day. This experience has been a most beautiful and helpful one to me, for I have been brought so much nearer to our Father-Mother God, divine Love, who is always near us. I rejoice in this beautiful proof of Love's care and protection, for it has not only helped me, but many people, who did not really know what Christian Science is, have heard of this wonderful demonstration, and have become interested by reason of it. I want to live so that my light will shine and glorify God daily. My gratitude and love to God is very great, also to Mrs. Eddy, who has brought us this wonderful truth, and helped us to know the power of divine Love. I know now that there never was an accident to God's child.—Miss Mary Eloise Decker, South Pasadena, Cal.
