Christian Scientists are gratified at the somewhat tardy...
Ames (Ia.) Intelligencer
Christian Scientists are gratified at the somewhat tardy recognition of the fact that Christian healing is an essential of the Christian religion, and this same recognition though tardy is a justification of the efforts which they have made during the past forty years. It is difficult, however, for a Christian Scientist to see wherein Christian Science needs a "corrective." Its affirmations and its denials are both emphatically Christian. Its teachings are logical, reasonable, convincing, and demonstrable. It denies the reality of sin, sickness, and death only in the same way that these are denied in the Bible, at the same time recognizing that, to the human sense of things and according to ordinary experience, these are very much of a reality, and as Mrs. Eddy has said in Science and Health, on page 460, "therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being."
Christian Scientists do not affirm any more concerning the infinite all-power of God to heal all manner of diseases than has been affirmed or declared in the Bible for thousands of years. The psalmist said, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction." Again he said, "Bless the Lord, ... who healeth all thy diseases." It was stated of Jesus that he healed "all manner of disease among the people." It is therefore a teaching of Scripture that the healing power of God is not limited to any particular phase of disease, but on the other hand is absolutely unlimited, adequate and sufficient for every need. This is one of the teachings of Scripture that Christian Science emphasizes, and in this emphasis there is recognized the fact that, as St. James states, God is without variableness, "neither shadow of turning;" and as St. Paul states, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." If consistent endeavor to follow the Scriptural teaching is "extremism," then Christian Scientists must plead guilty. Christian Science includes all that which makes for spirituality, as opposed to the intense materialism of this age, and its recognized success is due to its consistency with truth.
