Our brother's sermon, while setting forth much that is...

Fitchburg (Mass.) Sentinel

Our brother's sermon, while setting forth much that is true, befogs one fundamental fact and rule of procedure which should never be lost sight of, and that is the fact that Christ Jesus never employed drugs in healing, never employed anybody to make any diagnosis of diseases from a material standpoint, and never commanded his disciples to employ drugs or to have such diagnosis made, but he did command them to rely wholly on their faith, their knowledge of God. Spirit, and of the ever-living, ever-present Christ. Christ Jesus is, or ought to be, supreme authority for all Christians; and they should be content to follow his command, even if they cannot see the reason; but in this case the reason is easily discernible. All Christian agree that God is all-powerful; and God is clearly revealed in the Scriptures to be Spirit, and Spirit only. Hence, it is necessarily true that Spirit is all-powerful, therefore it is impossible that there should be any power in matter, which is opposite to Spirit. Spirit, God, cannot and does not use that which is opposite, opposed to Him, as an avenue to do His work. Hence, to say that God is all-powerful, and then to recommend the employment of material remedies for the treatment of disease, is inconsistency for which a harsher word might well be substituted, were it not for the fact that the inconsistency is usually not perceived and not intended.

A man who is not loyal to his wife "for worse" as well as "for better," as long as she is a true wife, is not regarded as a good or a right-minded husband. Likewise, a person who is not loyal to Spirit for both the "better" and the "worse" of human experience, hardly lives up to the Biblical requirements of a Christian. That ancient worthy, Job, furnishes us an excellent model in this respect. A person who will not rely upon the power of God, Spirit, as the only proper medicine at any and all stages of disease, to the extent that he does not do so, is not loyal to exact knowledge and procedure which constitutes the Science of Christianity; and the modern movement known as Christian Science, which stands in this age for scientific Christianity, cannot properly be held responsible for whatever may befall any one who departs from this rule.

Christian Science does not recognize any such thing as subconscious mind, or unconscious mind, or mortal mind, except as false claims. God is the source of all intelligence, and He is immortal Mind, and ever-conscious Mind. He is not the source of any mortal, or unconscious, or subconscious mind. Hence, Christian Science never works, cannot work, through the avenue of any subconscious mind, and it never works by suggestion emanating from a human source. Its disciples known and declare the truth about God and man, in order that mortals may be made free from their sins and sicknesses, without distinction as to whether the diseases are called organic or inorganic, from a human standpoint. The Lord Jesus healed "all manner of disease;" his immediate disciples did likewise; and such healing is being done by his modern disciples, known as Christian Scientists, past all manner of question, even though they do not succeed in healing every case that they undertake. The percentage of cases which they do benefit and heal is very large.
