All Christian denominations have their commentaries...

Vermont Union-Journal

All Christian denominations have their commentaries and writings which explain the Scriptures. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy is the Christian Science text-book and, as its title indicates, it is a "Key to the Scriptures," a commentary, a practical, spiritual explanation of the Scriptures, but this does not make of it a "sacred book," as stated in the article, if that means it is looked upon with superstitious veneration or in any sense that it takes the place of the Bible, which is usually called the "sacred book" of the Christian world.

In the Christian Science church services as many, if not more, passages are read from the Bible than in any other church service, and the adherents of this church give more time to the study of the Bible than do any other church-members of my acquaintance. They are seeking the deep, spiritual import of the Scriptures, not the "verbal inspiration of the original texts," as is stated. Mrs. Eddy's interpretation of the Scriptures gives them a clearer spiritual understanding of the meaning and intent of the Word as taught and practised by Jesus and his disciples in raising the dead, healing the sick, reforming the sinful, and comforting the sorrowing, than they previously had in their longtime church affiliations. Moreover, they have the proof of their corrected understanding of the Scriptures in better health, and more of that Mind in them "which was also in Christ Jesus," and as a result they are able to heal the sick, reform the sinful, and comfort the sorrowing. This is the test of discipleship which Jesus required as a proof that his teachings were understood, even though it "excites the scholar's disgust," as stated in the article. In those early days Jesus' teaching and practice so stirred the religious teachers and leaders of the Hebrew people that they crucified him.
