LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE

One evening, as I was sitting in the late twilight trying to realize the nothingness of certain discordant conditions, my room was suddenly illumined with a flood of beautiful rosy light. I looked from the window to discover the cause of this illumination, and saw a bonfire in an adjoining yard. A man who had moved into the next house the previous day was standing by the fire, engaged in the very prosaic work of burning up the rubbish and waste materials which his moving into new quarters had brought to light. He was busily intent on his work, having no purpose other than that all this refuse matter should be consumed, and was quite unconscious that the light produced by this combustion was illuminating every house in the neighborhood.

This circumstance brought to my thought several little experiences which had come to beginners in Science. A lady whose understanding of Christian Science was not yet very great, was engaged to do a certain kind of work where a number of other people were similarly employed. She found she was obliged to use all her knowledge of Christian Science, and to use it constantly, to overcome the errors in her own consciousness which her coming into new quarters (some understanding of Christian Science) had brought to light and shown it necessary to destroy. There was always a struggle, and sometimes the struggle was intense, but her one purpose was to overcome, although she had no thought that this consuming of error was shedding light on another's way.

One day, however, a fellow-laborer came to her and said, "I wish to ask what it is that you have which is possessed by no one else here. Why is it you are calmer, more self-possessed, and more patient than others?" The Scientist was glad to answer, "Oh, I have Christian Science to help me." "Then," answered the other, "I want Christian Science, too;" and in proof of the earnestness of her desire she purchased a copy of Science and Health and began its study.
