[Written for the Sentinel.]

"STAND STILL."

Ye shall not need to fight—stand still!
Not fight, and yon great host
Swiftly advancing, grimly bent on strife?
Have we not heard their proud and vaunting boast
That they would make us creatures of their will?

O God! must we like cowards stand,
Nor ever bend a bow
To speed one winged shaft to deal them death?
Stand still?—not fight?—and see this hated foe,
All unopposed, come and possess our land?

Silence! Your great Commander heed!
Set ye yourselves! Stand still!
The battle is not yours, but God's—and none
May question or oppose His sovereign will!
Then, think you, He of your small help hath need?

Shall Truth depend on human aid
His enemies to slay?
O foolish one, cast off thy mortal pride!
And be content thine humble part to play.
Stand still—know God—trust, and be unafraid!
