Freeport (Ill.) Journal

Having read the sermon recently printed in your columns, I wish to say that over three years ago I became convinced that Christian Scientists were instrumental in healing the sick. I was compelled to face this fact sympathetically because a woman healed was among my kindred, and her husband was turned from agnosticism to a profound faith in the Word of God. I asked help through a Christian Scientist for myself, and got it. Long before this I had felt that I could not understand the Bible if it did not teach that healing by faith should be the work of Christians to-day, and I began at once to study the Bible anew, strengthened by the fact that such healing was possible. I find my faith growing stronger every day and while I do not know Mrs. Eddy, I am thankful that she has inspired some people whom

I do know to undertake to carry out the command of Jesus to preach the gospel (or good news) and heal the sick.

Columns of denunciation will never make up for a word of explanation as to the fact of Christian Science healing, or as to the fact of failure on the part of other Christians to attempt it. I rejoice that some bishops recognize the demand upon them to conform to the Methodist book of discipline and heal sick. If John Wesley prayed for the healing of his horse and accomplished it. I accept his testimony and am interested to know how he did it. I accept the testimony of Jesus' professed followers as to their healing. Jesus upbraided some disciples because they refused to accept the testimony of others who said they had seen him risen. I wish I might call upon disciples of my own church to offer an effective prayer to raise the sick. Some indeed are daily coming closer to this power; I am not afraid to call upon Christian Scientists to pray, and no anathema frightens me. We have a God good enough and great enough to make truth-seeking perfectly safe.
