In the estimation of Christian Scientists Mrs. Eddy possesses a surer consciousness of God's nature, a clearer understanding of His methods, a higher perception of His laws, than is possessed by others. To hear the call of God men need to be weaned from the things of this world; they must be perceptive, receptive; they must have the open eye of which the ancient prophet sang; to obey the commands of heaven, great humility, faithfulness, and courage are required. Those men and women who are possessed of sufficient purity to hear and sufficient heroism to carry out heaven's high behests are few. Neither the mandate of the sovereign nor the acclamation of the people can bestow on men the lonely glory of understanding that makes a seer.
