For the churches to reestablish their power for good a new religion is not essential; but they must formulate new creeds in which their members do really believe and the principles of which they really are convinced are capable of and eminently fit and desirable for everyday application — with a consequent, subsequent living of such principles. That their hold on the multitude can be regained — if this be done — is true. It is shown by the surprising progress which certain expressions of religious belief, in which example follows precept (notably Christian Science), have made and in the respect with which they are received. Despite the distractions of an intensely material civilization, all those of that quality of mentality which gives the expression of religion any earnest thought — and they are many — would welcome and be happy to accept and live such doctrine if assured of its practicality, desirability, and truth.
