There is no body of Christians who are more prayerful...
Mildura Cultivator
There is no body of Christians who are more prayerful than Christian Scientists, for they believe in "prayer without ceasing." They understand true prayer to be the constant uplifting of one's thoughts to God, as the source of all being,—Life, Truth, and Love—the giver of all good. Their supreme desire is that they may have the constant realization of the ever-presence of divine power to overcome every temptation of sin or fear of disease that may present itself. The efficacy of this spiritual communion is proved by the results gained thereby; viz., the healing of the sick and sinful. In Mrs. Eddy's book, Science and Health, a chapter containing seventeen pages is devoted to the subject of prayer.
The assertion that Christian Science rejects the atonement is incorrect. Christian Scientists endorse the Bible teaching regarding the birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord, but hold that what is necessary to the salvation of mankind is the understanding of his life and wonderful works, as indicated by Paul in the following: "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." We maintain that the purpose of Jesus' life-work was the reconciliation of man to God indicated in his prayer: "That they may be one, as we are." Although Christian Scientist hold that sin, sickness, and death are not creations of God, but are the emanations of the carnal (mortal) mind, they maintain that these errors must be recognized, grappled with, overcome and destroyed by the supremacy of Spirit, as taught and practised by Jesus and his disciples.
