Fear, error, evil, sin, as experienced by humanity,...
Kanas City Medical Record
Fear, error, evil, sin, as experienced by humanity, are generally admitted to be mental, and are so considered in their treatment in Christian Science. Neither a mustard plaster nor the scalpel can reach fear or sin. They may be applied to their effects, but they cannot reach the cause. The Bible teaches that sin brought death. According to this premise, sickness and disease are the allies of sin and death. Jesus said, "How can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man?" Hence it is necessary to remove the erroneous mental cause before the evil effects can be successfully eliminated.
It is not the purpose of this article to argue against surgery or medicine, which have so patiently responded to humanity's call for so long a period. However, the world is awake to the fact that these means have not satisfied the human craving for something better. A more practical and positive method of deliverance and immunity from mortal anguish, ignorance, and suffering is needed. Certainly God, in His infinite wisdom and plan, has provided a positive and sure way; and all conscientious physicians are yearning to know a better way. Christian Scientists operate from the basis that the way is spiritual and not material, and conscientiously believe that they have Scriptural authority for it.
Jesus Christ taught that the power of God could and did heal the sick, and he implied that it was a knowledge of the truth that did the healing, for he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In order to show that attention to the physical or material conditions was not all that was necessary, he said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."
