I first heard of Christian Science twenty years ago, and...
I first heard of Christian Science twenty years ago, and from curiosity obtained the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read it in a desultory sort of way. Many of its statements gripped me firmly; this I remember. I had, however, determined upon the practice of medicine as a career, and was therefore loyal to the craft; so the "little book" was put away. Then came sin and its suffering; still I continued on in the way of the materialist, and in line with my ambition graduated from Rush Medical College, receiving the degree of M.D. from the Chicago Homeopathic College and an appointment as physician to its hospital. After several years of surgical practice, I added to my knowledge of medicine by work in Europe and also in the Orient. My interest in Christian Science was likewise revived, and my experience was rather unique, as I would operate during the day and read Science and Health in the evening. My health, never very good, now began to improve, and I gained forty pounds in weight. A violent temper was overcome, worry was forsaken, and the tobacco habit of years vanished. It was now clear to me that Christian Science was true, yet there were dark hours when it seemed I could not face the situation, for my friends and family became alarmed at this juncture and predicted my downfall and ruin; but I turned from matter to Spirit, and affirmed the truth that "one with God is a majority." Divine Love was near, and there was peace. A little later I had the great privilege of class instruction. Here I abandoned the practice of medicine for the practice of Christian Science.
Our tender gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, our Leader, is unfeigned, for we now realize that because she has been faithful to her glorious mission, the Bible, once closed and incomprehensible, has been opened to the world. As we understand more fully the words, "I and my Father are one," and strive for that Mind to be in us "which was also in Christ Jesus," we know that we shall be like him and partake of that Divine wisdom which annihilates death and demonstrates Life eternal.
Frank H. Edwards, M.D., Evanston, Ill.
