The earthquake and conflagration in this city of San Franciso has brought me such a lesson, through the understanding of Christian Science, that I feel I must make it public. For over eight months I had been trying to make a financial demonstration, but the seeming difficulty lay in the fact that I was still conscious of some reliance on material means and human wisdom. A couple of weeks before the fire I had opened an office as public stenographer, and this office was totally destroyed by fire and dynamite. Human wisdom was then indeed baffled, and there was nothing material to turn to. It was precisely at this point that the scales fell from my eyes and I distinctly realized the nothingness and self-destructiveness of matter, and with it all there came to me an all-absorbing consciousness of absolute trust in the Father. I now felt that because to sense all was lost, all was really gained through my new spiritual attitude; and it was so. Without solicitation on my part, help came to me so abundantly that I was enabled to open a new office with more machines than before, and work in my line is increasing daily. For this and many other demonstrations, physical and otherwise, not the least of which was the overcoming of a moral weakness to which I had been a slave for years, I am deeply indebted and truly grateful to the Father, who has so often brought me out of dark places, and to our revered Leader, who has made this truth practical for me and for all.
