In September 1900, I first learned of Christian Science
In September 1900, I first learned of Christian Science. At that time I was a member of an orthodox church, a church to which my entire family belonged and in which I had been brought up. I had, however, become dissatisfied with its teachings and simply clung to my Bible. I wanted a religion which was practical, not merely theoretical, and when reading the Bible and thinking of the promises therein, I had often wondered why people were not healed now as they were in Jesus' time. About this time I chanced to meet a woman with whom I had been acquainted for several years, and who had been a great sufferer. While talking with her I noticed that she seemed to be free from her old trouble, and asked her what she had been doing. In reply she told me she had been healed by Christian Science. Instantly I declared, "If you have been healed by Christian Science, I know it will heal my mother;" for she also had been subject to that very trouble for fourteen years.
Soon after this I called upon a practitioner, who kindly loaned me her copy of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, for one day, saying that she could not spare it longer than that. After reading the book that first evening, I became very much interested in the truths which it contained, and a week later purchased a copy for myself. I read the book almost constantly, and explained it as best I could to my mother, who could not at that time read or understand the English language. At the end of three weeks I found I had no further use for glasses, which I had been obliged to wear for ten years. After six weeks' study in this way my mother was completely healed of asthmatic and bowel trouble, and I was entirely free from diseases from which I had been a sufferer for many years, despite the efforts of the specialists whom I had employed. I was so impressed by the practicability and beauty of this Christ religion that I continued to study it, then united with the local Christian Science church, and six months later with The Mother Church, and I have since devoted all my time to Christian Science work. About two years ago my mother was seriously ill, and was healed in one week by Christian Science treatment. Before coming into this thought, she had had the same disease, and although she had the best medical treatment, eight weeks elapsed before she recovered, and even then she was in a very weakened condition. During the past five years my mother, although now seventy-five years of age, has learned to read Science and Health somewhat, and is trying to make her own demonstrations.
It is impossible for me to find words to express my gratitude to God, who has spoken to this age through our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy. She has patiently and lovingly shown us the way and has told us to follow her as she follows Christ.
