News and Observer,

If it is true, as stated by a critic, that most Christian Scientists "were cured of diseases they did not have, except in imagination," the author of that statement becomes at once involved in a question of veracity with some of the best physicians in the world. Christian Scientists do not diagnose their own symptoms, and, inasmuch as probably seven tenths of them come into Christian Science by way of physical healing, it follows that some doctor must have diagnosed their case before they were healed. If a mistake was made it was made by the doctor and not by the Christian Scientist. Such is the cul-de-sac into which the critic is driven who seeks thus to discredit the indisputable healing of Christian Science.

Christian Science heals disease by denying its verity, or right to exist in God's plan of creation, and similarly it frees men from sin by showing them that God is supreme, is all there is, and that the real man takes no pleasure in sin. The faithful, honest application of the teaching of Christian Science relative to sin and disease has never yet made a sinner or a sick man. What constitutes true prayer, what is atonement, what is the Saviour of the world,—these are important doctrinal points upon which, unfortunately, the Christian world is not a unit. Christian Scientists are entitled to have their interpretation of these points, without abuse or molestation. Mrs. Eddy has furnished a spiritual explanation of the inspired Word of God which is satisfying many thousands who had done their best to derive comfort from other creeds, and he who would seek to deprive them of their new-found hope assumes a great responsibility.
