The Moral Factor

Every thoughtful person who reads President Roosevelt's Thanksgiving proclamation must be impressed by the emphasis given to the moral and spiritual element,—that which alone makes for the true prosperity of a nation. Clearly does he point out the fact that the foes to be overcome are "our own passions, appetites, and follies." A great poet has said of one of the nations of the past.—

no foreign foe could quell
Thy soul, till from itself it fell;
Yes, self-abasement paved the way
To villain bonds and despot sway.
