It is related that the scribes and Pharisees once said to Jesus, "Master, we would see a sign from thee." But he answered and said unto them. "An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign: and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas."

Jesus claimed no power of himself, for he said, "I can of my own self do nothing." Neither do Christian Scientists make such claims, but they do claim that the promise of the Master to all "them that believe" (understand) his teaching shall be verified. They do not believe that any earnest follower of Jesus Christ can divorce his command "Preach the gospel" from "Heal the sick. . . . raise the dead, cast out devils" (evils), and be obedient. They do not claim to have more than touched the hem of the Master's robe in their understanding of the Science of Life, but they are striving to use the little they have, and they hope to grow into a fuller realization. What they have and hope to have they know belongs to every true follower of the Christ. Christian Scientists do not refuse to go to the aid of any who ask help in the true spirit, but they know that any who ask in the spirit of bravado could receive nothing. It is written of Jesus that "He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief."
