The first benefit I received from Christian Science was...
The first benefit I received from Christian Science was in 1900, when I was cured of a severe stomach trouble and bad cough. I had never been strong, having had repeated attacks of lung fever and grip until my physician told me that my lungs were affected and that I could never be well. At the time of beginning treatment, I had been in bed almost three months, with stomach trouble and what we then thought was appendicitis. I could not take any solid food without intense suffering, was living upon a very limited diet, and was in constant fear of pain. A lady who visited me had heard of Christian Science, and suggested that I try it, but I told her that I did not believe in faith cures and thought no more about it until I met a Scientist who told me that my stomach trouble and cough could be healed. She asked me what I knew of Christian Science or against it, and knowing nothing about it I could make no argument against it, so I began treatment, with no expectation of being benefited. The practitioner asked me if I believed in the Bible, which I thought that I did, being a member of an orthodox church. She then asked me if I accepted the life of Christ Jesus as an example to us, and if I did not believe that the sick should be healed now, for Christ expressly commanded that we should "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead."
After these questions I began to look more closely into the Bible, and to see that what Christ had done for others could be done for me. I was told that I should take no thought of what I ate, and to partake of food without fear, which I did, and rapidly regained my health and strength. I am very grateful to Christian Science, and to the noble woman who has so fearlessly upheld the banner of Truth. Besides the physical benefit, I am striving to overcome all sense of unhappiness and financial embarrassment. I try to remember that God is Mind and is not limited, and that God is Love.— Margaret Kephart, Atlanta, Ill.
