Two years ago we were occupying a house with another family, and while our rooms were separate we were much in one another's company. Our neighbors were not Christian Scientists, so that when one of them became sick they resorted to materia medica. The physician diagnosed the case as appendicitis, but owing to later developments called in a specialist who at once declared that the patient was suffering from smallpox in an advanced stage and reported it to the city authorities. Our family consisted of myself, wife, and one child, and the prospect of being quarantined was anything but agreeable.
The suggestions of mortal mind were met one after another, and when the city authorities arrived they did not think it necessary to quarantine the house, but adopted the plan of disinfecting the rooms and removing the patient to the hospital provided for contagious diseases. A few days went by and another member of the same family manifested symptoms of the disease, but in this case the complications were such that it was impossible to move the patient. There seemed to be no chance of escape from quarantine now, but, recognizing only divine Love as law, we were not surprised that it was found only necessary to placard the room in which the sick person lay, and nothing was said even about vaccination.
How often were we reminded during this trial, of that quotation from Science and Health, p. 392, "Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you may control yourself harmoniously." The 91st Psalm had always been a very beautiful one to us, but it seemed to mean a great deal more after this experience. "There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways."—Allen L. Clark, Omaha, Neb.
