[Written for the Sentinel.]

Patmos

Alone on Patmos Isle, in desert drear,
Whence every human hope and trust had fled,
Came John's pure vision,
Heavenly clear.

So to our waiting, longing hearts, O Love!
As all things earthly fail, and fade, and flee,
Reveal thy presence
From above—

And as we journey onward, leaving all
For joys of Heaven, life "hid with Christ in God,"
Teaches John's great lesson,
Love for all.
