I did not take up the study of Christian Science for a physical healing; but I was curious to know what had healed my mother of a serious stomach disorder which she had had for many years. A kind neighbor, seeing my mother's need, had lent her a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Mother was healed through reading this book.

My first healing came in about 1920, not long after that of my mother, during a so-called influenza epidemic. I was a high school senior in a small town away from home. I was too young in Science to realize the importance of taking into consideration the general thought of the family with whom I was to live. When I suddenly became ill, I asked the landlady to call a Christian Science practitioner for me. She refused.

I gradually grew worse. After a few days, against my wishes, a doctor was called. I refused medicine. I was then taken to the hospital, and my mother was notified.
