THE CHALLENGE OF EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

For most young people, September brings the challenge of expanding opportunity. Often it may mean only a move to a higher grade in school. But when a change of school or college is involved, or if leaving home for the first time, the Christian Scientist will make sure that he is taking no lurking fears along with him. He must see that a positive expectation of good is based upon his spiritual understanding of the Science of being.

The Christian Scientist knows that his mental attitude determines his experiences. He therefore endeavors to cast out any anxious mental pictures of unknown environment, unfriendly strangers, inadequacy or diffidence on his own part, with the certainty that he can never leave the presence of divine Love nor be surrounded by other than Love's spiritual ideas. He knows that all are actually God's children, members of one universal family; that as the image and likeness of Mind he is under every circumstance equipped with all that is required. He realizes that in proportion to his understanding that all are truly the very expressions of Life and Love will he take a blessing with him wherever he goes.

A young friend of mine recently had an interesting and helpful experience during the long vacation prior to his leaving home to attend school in a different part of the country. He and his mother were planning a camping holiday which would involve a good deal of motoring. Their car was something of a veteran. Although they themselves were never in trouble, nor had they ever actually witnessed an accident, nevertheless, during the weeks before their holiday they had seen the evidences of so many that the mother began to feel apprehensive.
