For many years I have been comforted,...
For many years I have been comforted, blessed, and healed by the articles and testimonies in our beloved periodicals, and I feel that it is time to add my tithe of gratitude for Christian Science. I should like to share the following experiences.
In December, 1946, I received word that my son, who had been serving in naval aviation, had lost his life when his plane crashed. The shock was great at the time, but almost at once a message from our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, came to me. Under the marginal heading "Erroneous despatch" on page 386, our Leader tells us that our grief is caused by false belief and that we are healed when the truth is understood. This brought comfort to me. That evening contact was made through a long-distance telephone call to a Christian Science practitioner, who worked for me during the ensuing difficult days.
It was necessary for me to make an overnight train trip to take care of details. After I boarded the train the following evening and prepared to retire, I put my copy of the textbook under my pillow intending to spend the night reading, for I felt that sleep was out of the question. I opened the book to page 427 and read these words: "If it is true that man lives, this fact can never change in Science to the opposite belief that man dies." I read to the bottom of the page and at once felt a wonderful sense of peace. The next thing I remember it was morning, and the porter was calling me. I had slept soundly all night. The rest of the trip was harmonious, and although it was necessary to stay with relatives who were not Christian Scientists, the whole household felt the uplifting power of Truth.
