During the years that I have earnestly studied Christian Science the testimonies in the periodicals have been read with interest, but for some time I doubted that I possessed the courage necessary to turn to God should a physical need arise. There was recognition that my stature as a man had increased as a result of the study and a feeling of gratitude for freedom from difficulties. However, the doubt remained. Although the experience to be related means much because of the physical freedom gained, it is valued ever so much more because it clearly proves that an understanding of man's relationship to God, as taught in Christian Science, does bring quick healing.

For more than a year there was an annoying stiffness in my back which, although painful at times, was never critical and which I casually dismissed as a nuisance. When the suggestion would arise that this condition was becoming chronic and that my tolerating it was inconsistent with the desire to progress in my understanding of Christian Science, the problem would be brushed aside with little more than the thought that it surely would be all right.

One night before leaving for a Christmas holiday trip, I joined a skating party on a pond unfamiliar to me. I was tripped by a partially submerged fence, and as my head and chest hit the ice I felt a sharp snap in the small of my back. Immediately getting to my feet, I assured those who skated to my side that all was well. Although it was possible to skate quite freely, I found that it was very difficult to sit and that the pain made it impossible to bend my back. That night I went to bed suffering from the condition, and I awakened the next morning to find myself nearly immobilized. Many fearful thoughts quickly presented themselves, for I was alone in a large building and unable to reach a telephone.
