MILESTONES

Setting up stones to commemorate important occasions was a common custom in Bible times. We read in Genesis that Jacob set up a stone at Bethel when he was fleeing to Padan-aram from the wrath of Esau. There God appeared to him with the promise (28:15), "Behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest."

To Jacob, this stone represented the dawning realization of God's ever-presence. "Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not," he exclaimed.

In early Scriptural history the river Jordan was a very important geographical landmark, and many references to it appear in the Bible, such as "over Jordan" and "beyond Jordan." When the children of Israel reached Jordan after their forty years of struggle and progress in the wilderness, Joshua made them mark their crossing by setting up twelve stones.
