"Behold, I have set before thee an open door"

[Extracts from reports prepared for the Reading Room Division]

Johannesburg, South Africa

Open house in our new Christian Science Reading Room was held on three consecutive days, a Sunday afternoon, and the two following evenings after the usual Reading Room hours. Previous to this event, a circular letter had been sent to the church members, informing them of the open house and requesting names of those, not students of Christian Science, who would welcome an invitation. Through our circulation and distribution committees, we obtained also the names of townspeople who had received our literature and had expressed appreciation of it. Invitations were sent to them.

Many guests attended. Visitors unacquainted with the Christian Science publications were surprised at the variety of books, periodicals, and pamphlets available in a Reading Room. Some of our church members saw, for the first time, the various editions of the writings of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. Impressed with the rich material available for study, several expressed their desire to become better acquainted with all the books and literature. Many voiced their appreciation of the peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.
