TRUE SEEING AND HEARING

Christian Science reveals the true nature and structure of man's body or identity. It teaches that man is not constituted of material organs but of spiritual ideas and faculties. A material body is a false concept of man's true identity. From this explanation it is evident that seeing and hearing are not dependent on material organs.

True seeing and hearing are actually faculties of Spirit, and they are eternal, perfect, unchanging, unchangeable, and indestructible. We learn in Christian Science that, spiritually interpreted, ears are spiritual understanding and eyes are spiritual discernment. By maintaining these scientific facts and rejecting the false evidence of the material senses that eyes and ears are material organs the Christian Scientist is enabled to enjoy normal sight and hearing and to prevent and heal discordant eye and ear conditions.

Since ears represent spiritual understanding and eyes spiritual discernment, it is important for us to gain an increasing sense of true understanding and discernment. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 505), "Spirit imparts the understanding which uplifts consciousness and leads into all truth."
