THE ROLE OF GRATITUDE IN HEALING

Healing in Christian Science is based upon an understanding of, and full reliance upon, the omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience of God. An important contributing factor to such healing is gratitude.

Gratitude, which acknowledges and appreciates good, is a joyous, God-bestowed quality. It does not companion with selfishness, cold indifference, nor does it associate with fear, limitation, discouragement, or self-pity. Gratitude glows with the warmth and strength of a firm conviction that God, good, is supreme.

Gratitude acknowledges and appreciates the good already evidenced in human experience. The giving of thanks for blessings received helps us in demonstrating an increasing awareness of good. The value of gratitude is revealed in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where Mary Baker Eddy writes (p.3): "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more. Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech."
