THE DAY OF SPIRIT

A need of our day is to gain a more spiritual concept of man and the universe. Matter is not the ultimate state; indeed, it is not even the present condition of existence. This being so, why waste time and effort in its pursuit and contemplation? The spiritual idea of man and the universe is attainable here and now and will appear in proportion as consciousness is spiritualized. The spiritual concept is natural and primitive and is not concomitant to matter, nor is it the outcome of matter. This fact should be sharply emphasized.

The material sense of man and the universe is the counterfeit of the reality. A material sense of the heavens and earth and man is but a fleeting concept of what really exists. The work of Christian Science is to instruct us by means of spiritualization of thought to translate the counterfeit into its spiritual meaning and thus find the reality. Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p.295): "God creates and governs the universe, including man. The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them."

Spiritual ideas are everywhere, but often we accept the counterfeit belief and try to make the best of it. Consider the idea "morning," for instance. What does morning mean to us? Is it material? Does it merely mean an awakening to the light of the sun and a rising from rest? Is it just a resumption of the daily duties continued from yesterday?
