A HIGHER TRUTHFULNESS
Christ Jesus explained his mission to Pilate in words of great dignity and simplicity. He said (John 18:37), "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth." He added, "Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice." The founder of Christianity introduced a higher sense of the truth to mankind than the world had known before. One who obeys Moses' commandment not to bear false witness against one's neighbor expresses veracity in human affairs. And this level of truthfulness is commendable, even imperative. But Jesus' sense of truthfulness was of a diviner essence, an essence which lifted him into the eternal kingdom.
Christian Science interprets the Master's demonstration of truthfulness, and those who hear his voice—understand the truth to which he bore witness—express the power to heal the sick and sinful. This Science shows that one can be morally and ethically truthful and yet believe in and manifest the untrue—disease, lack, and death. These states of thought are not true because they have no place in the creation of God, infinite Truth.
To be true and to be included in the universal Science which is truth, a concept must be spiritual and perfect. Imperfection is untruth, whatever form it takes. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 127). "If God, the All-in-all, be the creator of the spiritual universe, including man, then everything entitled to a classification as truth, or Science, must be comprised in a knowledge or understanding of God, for there can be nothing beyond illimitable divinity." To express the highest veracity, one must reject as a lie and as lawless whatever is not included in "illimitable divinity." Matter is not included therein: neither is sin, poor health, ignorance, or unhappiness. There is no truth in limitation of any kind, in disorder, or in death. Only the spiritual and good are real or true.
