Signs of the Times

George Matthew Adams in an article in the Beloit Daily News, Wisconsin

In the course of years it has been very interesting, and profitable, to watch young men in their growth and progress toward the more important stages of their lives. One thing, especially, I have noted, and it is this—those who have gone forward have been those who always gave that extra something.... That extra something of mind and heart that has always gone with success and usefulness. It has been a spiritual quality of life that is outstanding and distinguished. It is to be noted in every great man or woman.

It has been that extra something that is so marked in the career of President Eisenhower and of Abraham Lincoln. It's what has made such characters loved and trusted. It's what has made us all want to be something better and more inspiring to others. It has been what has made the boy work a little longer and more devotedly, regardless of time and effort. It isn't what one earns, but what one learns. It's the vision ahead.
