THE OTHER KITTEN

Mary Baker Eddy uses a simple, familiar illustration to explain a fundamental point in Christian Science. On page 220 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," she writes, "Mortal mind produces its own phenomena, and then charges them to something else.—like a kitten glancing into the mirror at itself and thinking it sees another kitten."

Many of us have come upon the interesting spectacle of a kitten seeing itself in the mirror. It may draw back quickly, suspicious of the other kitten. At the same time the other one does likewise. If after a bit of skirmishing, the kitten advances and reaches out a playful paw, the other does the same. Little does the kitten realize that all the while it has been seeing its own image.

A point we need to keep before us constantly is that in Christian Science we learn that matter is not causative. Matter is not the source of consciousness; it is not substance. Matter is not primary force, for it is but mortal mind's own manifested thought.
