My introduction to Christian Science...

My introduction to Christian Science came through witnessing the quick healing of a school friend. I was immediately interested in this new religion and began to study the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. A short time afterward, while living in a girls' club, I became ill with influenza. Remembering my friend's healing, I began with confidence to read the textbook. I knew nothing about Christian Science practitioners, for all that I had seen my friend do was to read the book.

I continued reading but steadily grew worse. One night some friends in the club came to my room and told me that they thought I had pneumonia. They wanted to send for a doctor. I was too ill to argue, but I asked them to wait until morning. They consented to this. The pain was so great that I could not sleep; so I propped myself up in bed and read Science and Health all night. Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 152), "Truth has a healing effect, even when not fully understood." This statement was proved true. By morning I was completely healed, and I went to town with my surprised friends.

At one time I was staying with a friend who was working out a problem with Christian Science help. We spent many hours each day studying Science and voicing the truth. Occasionally we rode horseback. Once while riding fast I fell from my horse and hit my head on a rock. My first thought was: "How awful! I am here to help my friend, and I myself fall and get hurt."
