Church Dedications

Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.

Nelson, Lancashire, England (Society).

On Sunday, June 6, Christian Scientists in Nelson joyfully dedicated their Eleanor Street premises.... It is gratifying to know that ... many people locally view the preservation of the Christian way of life as a matter of vital concern.... Christian Science Society, Nelson, has a comparatively brief history. In September, 1929, a group of worshipers ... held services in a room at 17a Forest Street. They continued to do so until June, 1934, when, as a growing body, they took a forward step, transferring their meetings to premises in Eleanor Street, and thus opening the way for further progress and development. The following April they gained recognition as a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.... Succeeding years brought the formation of a Sunday School, free lending library, and Reading Room, all under the one roof, and in 1943 the members decided to buy the premises. Purchase was effected two years later, and good progress was made in reducing the debt on the building and on a three-manual organ installed in 1950. Subsequently, application was made to the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy for assistance in canceling the debt, and it was given.
