I should like to record my gratitude...

I should like to record my gratitude for having been led to take up the study of Christian Science and for the many wonderful healings I have had through relying entirely on its teachings. For about five years I was completely deaf in my left ear, after having an abscess and extreme pain in it. During this period I sometimes became slightly deaf in the other ear also. Each time this occurred I sought the help of a Christian Science practitioner, and the deafness would leave the right ear, but the left one remained deaf. I knew that this was not a complete healing, such as we are taught to expect in Christian Science, but I managed to get along all right hearing with only one ear, and I became apathetic about the condition.

Then quite suddenly I became so deaf that I could not hear people speaking to me even when I listened intently. This was a source of great worry and embarrassment to me, and once again I sought the help of the practitioner.

I had studied many times the definition of "ears," given by Mrs. Eddy on page 585 of Science and Health, which reads in part, "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding." I knew that when I had sufficient understanding of the truth of God and man I would no longer be unable to hear; but I failed to get this understanding, mainly because I was thinking too much about deafness and not enough about God.
