COMPASSIONATE UNDERSTANDING

Mary Baker Eddy writes, "The divinity of the Christ was made manifest in the humanity of Jesus" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 25). All through Jesus' life we find his consideration for the human needs of others. However, this did not cause him to be less active in making his own demonstration of spirituality.

Among other things we find that the Master was able to go forty days without material nourishment. At the end of this time he rejected the devil's suggestion that he must be hungry and that he should use his spiritual power to change stones into bread. Turning on his adversary, the Master said (Matt. 4:4), "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

This true knowledge was demonstrated in Jesus' own life, but he did not try to force it on those unprepared for it. He realized that each would have to advance step by step. Let us ask ourselves if we are always as patient and loving as he was.
