HELPING THE CHILDREN
To look upon childish ailments as a necessary part of children's lives is a mistake which only Christian Science can correct. Every aggressive suggestion of illness must be silenced by right knowing. As Christian Scientists we acknowledge God to be the only Mind, from which emanates every true idea. Then we see that He is the Mind of every idea and know that children, being actually spiritual, not material, live in Spirit, not in matter. Therefore they impart good and are receptive only to that which is a blessing. Thus they are eternally safe.
As parents realize and accept the fatherhood and motherhood of God and see that, because God is the one power, any supposed power apart from Him is without basis or reality, they will understand how to demonstrate God's care and love for their children.
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 582) Mary Baker Eddy gives the spiritual definition of "children" as, "The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love." It is easy to see that qualities of sweetness, innocence, purity, trustfulness, faith in good, joyous activity, boundless energy, which a child manifests, are fruits of the Spirit and so are immune from mortal mind beliefs. If some error seems to be associated with them, we can know that it is powerless, having no creator. Jesus loved the child thought and referred to it in his talks with his disciples. Once he said (Matt. 18:10): "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven."
