No doubt many of your readers were more than a little interested in the column "Samuelson Soliloquizes" in [a recent] issue. The writer's thoughtful recognition of the endeavors being made by churches, hospitals, physicians, surgeons, and nurses to alleviate the suffering of humanity and eliminate the cause of such suffering was noted with interest.

Christian Scientists, I am sure, keenly appreciated the friendly reference to their religion. However, it does seem necessary to offer a few words of clarification in connection with the second reference to Christian Science as "this system of subconscious mental practice." Subconscious refers to "the nature of mental operation yet not present in consciousness" or "of the lowest degree of consciousness," to quote from Webster.
