"WORK OUT YOUR OWN SALVATION"

The healing of the smoking habit was an unlooked-for event to one Christian Scientist. Before becoming interested in this Science he had tried to get rid of the habit by the use of human will, but his craving to smoke did not lessen, so the attempt was abandoned.

After attending his first Christian Science lecture he started reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and attending a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. One day, as he was walking along the street smoking, he was stopped by an acquaintance, who startled him by declaring that smoking and Christian Science were incompatible and that he would have to give up one or the other. Disturbed, the student went to a Christian Science practitioner to check the accuracy of the statement.

He was advised not to be disturbed by his friend's remark, but rather to devote himself to the study of Science and Health for an understanding of God and man which would help him to experience a more harmonious, healthier, and happier life. This he did faithfully and continuously, to the exclusion of all else that could be eliminated which would interfere with his searching to find God. Months went by. Christmas Day arrived, and with it gifts of cigars. Much to the surprise of the student, on that very day the desire to smoke was gone.
