I am grateful that through Christian Science...
I am grateful that through Christian Science my life now has meaning and purpose.
Before I took up the study of this Science, one sickness followed another. When I was seven years of age, and my mother had again taken me to a doctor because of a swollen knee, he said I was suffering from tubercular inflammation of the knee joint. He said the illness would be long drawn out and told us to report to the Charite, the well-known hospital in Berlin.
In the course of the next four years I underwent six operations. Because I was not healed, I was sent to a sanatorium for those suffering from tuberculosis, where fresh air and sunshine were to bring about a complete healing. Summer and winter I slept on an open balcony with only a roof over my head. The result was that in two years, instead of improving, my condition grew worse. The disease had spread to the kidneys. My whole body was swollen, and I was put on a diet. I was then taken to another hospital, and after I had been examined, my parents were told that it would be necessary to amputate my leg.
For the second time since I had been taken ill, my parents' attention was called to Christian Science. That was in 1921, and I was then fifteen years of age. My parents took me out of the hospital, and Christian Science treatment was asked for. The diet was discontinued; I ate whatever was put on the table. Four weeks later I noticed that my body was no longer swollen. When this healing occurred I do not know. I had completely forgotten the disease.
As to the leg, that was another matter. At the beginning of the treatment, the condition grew worse. But I had great confidence in Christian Science. The aggravation of the disease could not shake my faith in God's ability to help me, a faith I had always had as a child. My mother shared my confidence in Science, and for that I am grateful to her. After a time the healing took place, and it has remained permanent.
I am sincerely grateful to the friends and to the practitioner who so lovingly watched over my first steps in Christian Science. The privilege of being a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church makes me very happy. My gratitude to Mrs. Eddy is so great that I cannot express it in words. Her words and works always inspire me with reverence.—(Miss) Martha Oehmke, Berlin-Buckow-Ost, Germany.
